Cui Genliang, founder of Hengtong: Let China’s optical communications go global

With the successful development of light rod technology, Hengtong Group became the only company in China that mastered cutting-edge light rod technology and independent intellectual property rights at that time of private enterprises.

Today, Hengtong Group has become a heavyweight manufacturer in the domestic optical communications industry, and has become the biggest winner in China Mobile’s recent centralized procurement of optical fiber and cable products.

Cui Genliang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hengtong Group, in the eyes of ordinary people, he is a representative of the National People's Congress, a private entrepreneur, and a model worker, but he also has another identity ——Veteran, few people mention it. It was this military experience that gave him the spirit of "persistence" and "dare to be the first", and pushed him to develop Hengtong Group from a small cable factory into a domestic optical communications company. An important leading supplier in the industry.

Regarding his entrepreneurial experience, Cui Genliang said that every step of success and progress will have ups and downs and encounter difficulties.

Being a business owner is the same as being a human being. You must have perseverance. Don’t shrink back when encountering difficulties. You must persist. As long as you can persist until the last minute, you must persist until the last minute. Maybe it is the last minute. You have overcome the difficulty.

The predecessor of Hengtong Group was Wujiang Optoelectronic Communication Cable Factory established in 1991.

At that time, this cable factory claimed to have a total investment of 3.8 million yuan. In fact, the actual funds in place were only more than 1 million yuan, and it also carried a debt of 1.2 million yuan.

The entire factory. The property is only a few hundred square meters of dilapidated factory buildings, a few outdated equipment and a scrapped iron furnace.

But in such a dilemma, Cui Genliang With the slogan "Dare to climb the peak, dare to create great achievements, dare to be the first, dare to strive for the first class", this "small fishing boat" rushed into the domestic optical cable market, which was still monopolized by foreign manufacturers.

In fact, Cui Genliang and his small cable factory chose to enter the domestic optical cable market because China was experiencing a wave of optical network construction at the time.

Of course the most important thing is that Cui Genliang dares to try new things

According to reports, the first pot of gold after the cable factory came from the cooperation with Jiangsu Cooperation with the Provincial Communication Cable Factory.

At that time, he exchanged equity and technology for the latter's support, which enabled the company to successfully go into production and generate profits and taxes of 870,000 yuan in the first year.

Subsequently, he cooperated with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Wuhan Academy of Posts and Telecommunications, and Japan's Miaoxiangen Co., Ltd. to establish the Yangtze River Optical Cable United Company and Wujiang Miaodu Optical Cable Co., Ltd. (the predecessor of Hengtong Optoelectronics) in three years. Achieved a triple jump.

In 1994, Wujiang Optoelectronic Communication Cable Factory officially changed its name to Jiangsu Hengtong Group Company.

The establishment of Hengtong Group did not make Cui Genliang relax. Instead, the development environment at that time forced him to make changes again.

At that time, China had already built an "eight vertical and eight horizontal" trunk line network, connecting all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country.

However, almost all the optical fibers used in these backbone networks were imported from foreign manufacturers. Because the output and quality of domestic optical fibers at that time were relatively backward, it was difficult to meet the construction requirements of the backbone networks.

The root cause of all this is that domestic companies do not have the ability to independently develop optical fiber preforms and are choked by foreign manufacturers.

The most important thing is that the research and development of light rods is very costly and risky, and many private enterprises cannot afford it. This is also what some senior executives of Hengtong Group are worried about. However, Cui Genliang still defied all opinions and invested 600 million in 2006. Yuan is used for light rod research and development.

It is understood that Hengtong had no R&D equipment or test materials at that time, and everything started from scratch. However, after more than 200 R&D personnel and more than 1,500 people working day and night, one morning four years later, Cui Genliang received the good news and finally "can have a peaceful sleep."

With the successful research and development of light rod technology, Hengtong Group became the only private enterprise in China that mastered cutting-edge light rod technology and independent intellectual property rights.

Today, Hengtong Group has become a domestic The heavyweight manufacturer in the optical communications industry has become the biggest winner in China Mobile's recent centralized purchase of optical fiber and cable products.
