Gulf2Africa submarine optical cable system in the Gulf of Aden is in preparation
According to Oman Telecom, Oman Telecom has reached a cooperation agreement with Ethiopian Telecom Company, Golis Telecom Company and Somali Telecom Company to build a Gulf of Aden submarine optical cable system, Gulf2Africa, connecting Oman, Somalia and Ethiopia.
According to the plan, this submarine optical cable project will start from Salalah, Oman, pass through Bosaso, Somalia, and the Berbera region of Somaliland, and then reach Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, via a land cable. 1,500 kilometers, with a design capacity of 20Tbps, and is expected to be put into use in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Sohail Qadir, Vice President of Oman Telecom, said that this is the first step in Oman Telecom’s plan to expand its optical cable network in Africa, which is to extend to the African continent through direct connections to Somalia.
The completion of this submarine optical cable will help Somalia and Ethiopia, two countries with backward Internet services, quickly obtain low-latency, high-speed international Internet access.
In the future, this submarine optical cable will also be interconnected with Oman Telecom’s existing nine submarine optical cable systems to further improve the quality of Internet services.
