In response to the development needs and challenges of China Unicom's high-speed optical transmission network, China Unicom has actively carried out forward-looking research on new G.654.E optical fiber technology and 400G ultra-high-speed transmission technology.

The G.654.E optical fiber and 400G WDM system tests carried out by China Unicom in Jinan-Qingdao, Shandong and Hami-Barkol, Xinjiang have achieved the expected research purposes, and the main results include two major aspects.

1. For the first time, the terrestrial application performance and transmission technology advantages of G.654.E optical fiber have been fully verified. In particular, it has been fully confirmed that the transmission performance improvement brought by the large effective area of ​​G.654.E optical fiber is much greater than that of optical fiber. The performance improvement brought about by the reduced loss is in line with theoretical and laboratory research expectations.

2. For the first time, it is clearly stated that G.654 optical fiber with large effective area should be given priority instead of blindly reducing the attenuation coefficient of G.652 optical fiber.

This research result lays the foundation and points the direction for China’s ultra-high-speed, ultra-long distance and ultra-large capacity transmission technology research and existing network applications.
