New metric for optical cable attenuation optimizes network design

For many years, single-core fiber attenuation in the largest fiber optic cables has become the industry standard for fiber attenuation performance.

This ensures that system designers can account for worst-case attenuation in link design.

With today's highly advanced optical fiber and cable manufacturing technology, the frequency of maximum fiber attenuation events in these optical cables is becoming increasingly rare. Secondly, more representative attenuation specifications are also necessary.

This proposed metric, link design attenuation (based on typical attenuation), defines a more practical attenuation value for use in fiber optic cable performance analysis and system design.
